8. Training and Development

Training and development are a crucial factor in every organization. Training and development in Human Resource Management is a method for teaching personnel inside a corporation. It contains a variety of tools, instructions, and activities aimed at increasing employee performance. It provides an opportunity for employees to expand their knowledge and improve their abilities.

Why employees need training and development.

increase the productivity: Upskilling employees with advanced tools and technology can enhance efficiency, boost motivation, and foster a culture of learning. This not only improves adaptability to challenges but also fosters better employee bonding, ultimately contributing to increased productivity.

Improve the quality of product or service: Training and development programs provide employees with the opportunity to learn from experts, improve their skills, and provide uniform instructions, enabling them to create better products and services.

Reduce the employee turnover: Research indicates that training and development positively impacts employee turnover by enhancing job satisfaction, belongingness, and commitment, and fostering better organizational relationships, thereby decreasing intentions to leave and increasing workforce retention (Team, 2024).

Customer satisfaction

Well-trained employees can better handle customer needs and resolve issues, which can lead to improved customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Types of trainings.

On the Job Training – OJT: OJT is a hands-on training method used by employees to learn new processes or skills for workplace execution. Under experienced guidance, it involves real-life situations, albeit not everyone enjoys it and may disrupt their work schedule, but yields faster results (Ajao, 2024).

Role Playing: Role-playing is an interactive technique where a trainer and trainee act out real-life roles in simulated workplace scenarios. It helps trainees practice skills in a controlled environment, with trainers correcting mistakes. It also provides real-life problem-solving scenarios. This method prepares employees for real-life situations and boosts confidence, but is time-consuming, expensive, and may not be suitable for self-conscious employees (Ajao, 2024).

Job Rotation: The method involves transferring employees to different roles and departments, exposing them to diverse administrative functions and fostering interdepartmental collaboration. Although it may be time-consuming and disrupt team dynamics, it also provides extensive knowledge (Ajao, 2024).

Case studies or other readings: Case studies are a useful tool for employee training, providing quick access to real workplace issues. These can be read at one's own pace or during team-building sessions. However, more complex topics may require more advanced training methods.

Conclusion

By using these methods employers can improve the knowledge of employees. Training and development are essential for organizations to increase productivity, improve product quality, and reduce employee turnover. There are various types of training, including On the Job Training, Role Playing, Job Rotation, and Case Studies. These methods provide hands-on learning experiences, real-life scenarios, and exposure to diverse administrative functions, fostering interdepartmental collaboration and enhancing employee knowledge.
